The Road to The Crown
A small village in the south outside the walls of Constantinople, where Emperor Justinian built a church in the 6th Century, was later got destroyed. A monastery was built there and was considered a sacred place where people came to get healed.
The Byzantine emperors came here to get crowned; the Ottoman who became Sultan was girded in Eyup with a sword following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453.
Prophet's companion Eyup al-Ansari was buried here near the walls of Constantinople, and Fatih Sultan Mehmed built a proper mausoleum over Ansari's grave, the mosque, and the al-Ansari shrine, which later became a religious site for pilgrimage.
